The original designs sold very well for the next two or three years, until quite unexpectedly, the price of silver started to shoot up. This was down to U.S. speculators who forward bought all the available silver for the next two years, driving up the silver price to incredible levels. As a result, all our deliveries had a surcharge added to every invoice.
We had to take some action, so it was decided to redesign the complete range and manufacture it in much lighter silver — thereby cutting the cost greatly.
The new, much lighter collection, designed by Colin Terris in 1975 resulted in a much more realistic selling price, and was produced until the 1980’s. It was made by Scotia Jewellery in Dunoon and was Hall Marked in Edinburgh. The silver design was kept to the minimum, and the miniature millefiori paperweight became for the first time, the main focus of each jewellery piece!
